  • Details
This is a 19th century Churn Dash quilt, dating to approximately the 1880s–1890s, and rich with the classic fabrics, set on point, and with the Churn Dash blocks framed by a Turkey red calico. The period fabrics include indigo shirtings, madder browns, mourning prints, and small-scale geometrics, all typical of the era. Several blocks feature classic black and white mourning prints, while others showcase indigo discharge patterns and finely woven shirting stripes and checks.

The hand-quilting is in diagonal grids, while the back is the same Turkey-red calico of the blocks on the front and it has been turned to the front and hand-stitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very lightweight.

CONDITION: The quilt is in very good, sturdy condition with some thinning of the dark brown patches (see photos), a split in the back that has signs of an old repair, including with repeated machine stitching that is visible on the front. See photos.
