A wonderful example of a classic Queen’s Favorite Quilt, this beautifully preserved quilt dates to the early 20th century (1910-1920s) and carries the embroidered inscription: “Ma Gray to Elwood." on one border. The name Elwood reached its peak of popularity in 1880 and by 1920 was on a downhill slide. It's not clear how old Elwood would have been at the turn of the century, but hopefully old enough to appreciate the tremendous amount of work that Ma Gray put into making this quilt.
The quilt features an arrangement of alternating pink and green Queen’s Favorite blocks set against a creamy white background, a soft pastel palette quintessential of the early 20th century. But what really makes the quilt stand out is the intricate, expert quilting in modified feather wreaths in every open cream-white space in the quilt. The rest of the hand-quilting is in detailed diagonal grids done in tiny stitches, including along the four-sided green and pink border.
The back is white cotton while the binding is pink cotton that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight.
CONDITION: The quilt is in excellent antique condition with no issues noted. It has been soaked, freshly hand-washed and line-dried, giving it a light natural sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
