  • Details
Dating to approximately the 1880s, this Sugar Loaf Quilt features rows of pieced triangles constructed from indigo plaids, shirtings, double blues, blacks, pinks, browns, and other period cotton fabrics, all set against a soft yellow ground.

The hand-quilting is extensive and in concentric shell grids across the yellow ground and setting triangles. The back is a gauzy see-through cream-white cotton as is the binding that has been hand stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is unsized and lightweight.

CONDITION: The a primitive, timeworn antique quilt and retains honest signs of over 130 years of use and survival with condition issues as visible in the photos that include:
    * Scattered small holes and small areas of fabric loss and thinning
    * Edge wear/beginning fraying of the binding
    * A few small historic patches and repairs
    * Minor toning and age discoloration

Despite these issues, the quilt remains sturdy, beautiful and retains excellent visual impact.
