This charming Nest and Fledgling quilt has a unique angle on this old pattern, with X's along the blue sashing and tiny - just 6.5 inch blocks - all set against a white ground. Each nest is pieced from a different assortment of colorful feedsack and scrap fabrics, from florals and shirtings to conversation prints and feedsack cottons.
This quilt is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted, with hand quilting in outlines of the patchwork. The quilting appears to have been done by multiple people - some of it is even, tiny and precise while other areas appear to be the work of a first-time quilter with tiny, but less precise stitching.
The back is white cotton while the blue check cotton binding appears much newer and has been machine stitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight.
CONDITION: This quilt is in excellent antique condition for its age, with beginning fabric thinning to the turquoise blue fabric and fading that has turned some of the blue sashing into a very light blue as can be seen in the photos. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description. It has been soaked, freshly hand-washed and line-dried, giving a light natural sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
