Vintage 1978 Hand Quilted String Quilt – Signed & Dated – 75” x 94”

This is a beautiful Vintage String Quilt, dated 1978 and inscribed by the maker and composed of more than 200 small square blocks pieced in the string-quilt tradition from narrow strips and irregular scraps. The blocks are separated by narrow white sashing.

The fabric assortment includes small-scale florals, calicos, paisleys, plaids and checks, novelty-like prints and solids in pink, lime and emerald green, turquoise and light blue, purple, red, yellow, brown and gray, with some of the fabrics considerably earlier than 1978.

The hand quilting is in crosshatch grids. The back is a plain ivory cotton that has been turned to the front and machine stitched to form the binding. The batting is thin and lightweight.

There is a handwritten inscription near the front left lower corner:

“Pieced by Granny
Quilted by Great Aunt Marguerite Frye
For Kelly Bloom”

with the date 1978 written alongside.

CONDITION: Very good vintage condition. The hand quilting, somewhat irregular piecing and wonderfully varied assortment of fabrics are all part of its authentic homemade character. Please examine all photographs closely as they form an important part of the description.
