  • Details
This is a truly exceptional late 19th-century Princess Feather Quilt, circa 1870–1890, featuring intricate hand appliqué, outstanding hand quilting, and a striking four-block arrangement in red and green against a white cotton ground.

The design consists of four large Princess Feather motifs with deeply serrated green plumes, small red flower buds, and bold red central flowers with golden yellow centers. Additional feather and floral motifs extend around the outer edges.

The appliqué workmanship is impressive - the tiny, almost invisible stitching, along with sharply pointed feather edges and the stuffed applique flower buds.

The hand quilting is elaborate and beautifully executed - with quilted veins in the leaves and echo quilting and texture in the flowers, along with feather motifs, flowers and densely quilted geometric shapes.

The back is cream-white cotton that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is very lightweight and thin.
