Vintage 1940s Hand Embroidered Flower Vine Quilt – Green & White – 73” x 83”

This is an exquisite 1940s hand-embroidered and hand-quilted cotton quilt featuring an elaborate floral vine and basket design in rich emerald green and white.

There is a large central white panel with five vertical arrangements of flowering vines rising from a decorative basket with each flower, leaf, stem, and basket meticulously worked in green cross-stitch embroidery. The central composition is surrounded by a wide emerald green border featuring contrasting white embroidered floral baskets, leafy branches, and gracefully curved floral arrangements.

The embroidery is exceptionally detailed, with thousands of individual cross-stitches forming the intricate botanical designs. The quilt also features extensive hand quilting, including feather motifs, diagonal grid quilting throughout the white center and closely spaced parallel quilting with decorative floral and leaf motifs throughout the green borders.

The combination of the saturated emerald green cotton, crisp white background, elaborate embroidery, and detailed hand quilting makes this a particularly striking example of mid-20th-century American needlework.

The back is white cotton while the quilt has been knife-edge finished and handstitched closed. The cotton batting is very lightweight.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition with the natural soft texture and gentle puckering characteristic of an extensively hand-quilted cotton quilt. The emerald green remains vibrant, and the embroidery is exceptionally well preserved. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed in fragrance-free detergent and line dried outdoors, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
