Vintage 1940s Scrappy Dresden Plate Quilt – Hand Quilted & Embroidered – 77” x 89”

Such a lovely scrappy 1940s Dresden Plate Quilt featuring twelve large Dresden Plates appliquéd onto white cotton blocks and framed with peach-colored sashing. Each plate includes small floral prints, geometric designs, checks, stripes, and novelty prints characteristic of the 1930s and 1940s.

The quilt features particularly elaborate and varied hand quilting, with twisted rope designs running through the peach sashing, intricate geometric and echo quilting surrounding the Dresden Plates, and additional floral quilting motifs throughout. The centers of the Dresden Plates feature hand-quilted floral designs, while the circular blocks at the sashing intersections have distinctive star quilting. Both the Dresden Plates and the circular intersection blocks are outlined with contrasting dark embroidery, emphasizing the appliqué and geometric arrangement.

Another labor intensive feature is the decorative zigzag or prairie-point-style finish along all four sides. The back is white cotton while the prairie-point finish takes the place of binding. The cotton batting is lightweight and thin.
