This is a really exquisite 1930s Basket of Diamonds quilt featuring 30 precisely pieced basket blocks in a rich golden-orange cotton against a crisp white background, surrounded by a wide coordinating border. The exceptional quality of the hand quilting makes this an especially fine example of American quiltmaking from the period.
The quilt features remarkably fine, closely spaced hand quilting measuring approximately 8–9 stitches per inch. Elaborate feather wreaths fill the open white areas between the baskets, while the wide golden-orange border is covered with beautifully executed feather quilting, including sweeping feathered designs at the corners. Fine diagonal crosshatching and carefully stitched outlines accentuate the individual pieces of the basket blocks, including the tiny triangles.
The combination of precise geometric patchwork, beautifully executed feather quilting, and the striking two-color design reflects a remarkable level of workmanship and an exceptionally time-consuming effort.
The back is cream-white cotton as is the binding that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is lightweight and thin.
