  • Details
This is a wonderful antique quilt dating to the 1920s and featuring an unusual Kite variation of the traditional Pine Burr pattern. The intricate geometric design combines elongated kite-shaped pieces in pale yellow with scrappy patchwork composed of a wonderful assortment of early 20th-century cotton fabrics.

The striking arrangement is an interlocking pattern of diamonds, pinwheels, and geometric figures. The fabrics include rich indigo blues, blue-and-white plaids, shirting stripes, soft pinks, lavender, black prints, and assorted small-scale calicos. The pale yellow background provides a beautiful contrast to the predominantly blue patchwork.

Of particular note is the exceptionally dense hand quilting throughout. The yellow kite-shaped sections feature elaborate geometric quilting patterns, while the smaller patchwork pieces are closely quilted.

The back is a pale yellow cotton while the binding is a dark peach cotton that has been handstitched to both sides. The cotton batting is unsized and lightweight.

Unfortunately, this quilt has substantial condition issues and is being sold as a cutter quilt. Nevertheless, it retains beautiful sections of original antique patchwork and exceptionally fine hand quilting for a utility quilt.

The binding also exhibits wear.
