An unusual 1930s–1940s American folk art crazy quilt featuring an improvisational arrangement of vintage cotton scraps, irregular patchwork, and overlapping fabric remnants. This all cotton quilt has a distinctive primitive, utilitarian character though it is roughly modeled after the more formal Victorian crazy quilts made of silk and satin.
Its cotton fabrics include calicos, florals, checks, stripes, polka dots, and geometric prints in shades of blue, pink, green, lavender, yellow, and red. Some sections incorporate remnants of earlier pieced quilt blocks, the most prominent of which are at least six hexagon "flowers" interspersed throughout the top.
The red thread used for hand quilting stands out and is worked in long, irregular running stitches that form a loose geometric grid across the entire quilt. The combination of improvisational fabric placement, exposed seams, and bold red stitching gives this quilt a strong folk art appearance.
The back is white cotton that has been turned to the front and handstitched to form the binding. The cotton batting is unsized and lightweight/thin.
Despite its condition issues, the quilt retains its overall composition and displays beautifully.

CONDITION: This quilt has age-related condition issues, including areas of fabric deterioration, fraying, exposed seams, and fabric loss, as documented in the close-up photographs. Some individual patches have deteriorated considerably, while many others remain intact. Due to the fact that it has been foundation pieced (small pieces sewn into individual muslin blocks), the quilt remains sturdy, structurally intact and with visual appeal. It is being offered as an authentic vintage folk art textile with condition issues, rather than as a cutter quilt.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description. The quilt has been soaked, freshly hand washed and line dried, giving it a light, natural, sun-dried cotton scent (not artificially fragranced).
